The Perfect Hangover Cure?
Today is Bloody Mary Day. The Bloody Mary is rumored to be the perfect hangover cure, which is a good thing because, coincidentally, Hangover Day is celebrated today as well. These two seem to go hand in hand. A Bloody Mary is made up primarily of tomato juice, vodka, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, pepper, and ice cubes. There are many variations on the basic recipe, and they are usually garnished, whether it be with just a stalk of celery or so elaborately decorated they seem to consist of an entire meal.
A Brief History of Bloody Mary Day
The Bloody Mary is claimed to have been brought over from Paris when prohibition ended in the United States by a bartender named Ferdinand Petiot, better known as Pete to those at the bar, when he came over from Paris to work in New York. The drink, originally called Bucket of Blood in France, it is best known as Bloody Mary today. It became known as Red Snapper for a while here in the United States but soon became best known as a Bloody Mary. A few establishments still call it a Red Snapper but it is most widely known by the name of Bloody Mary. A name which is in itself as clouded as the drink itself. One rumor claims it was named after Queen Mary Tudor of England, who was known for her bloody reign, as she was known as Bloody Mary. George Jessel, an American singer/songwriter, and actor, claims to have named it after Mary Geraghty, a friend of his.
While there are as many versions of this famous drink out there as there are stories about it, a basic recipe is below. I really like Bloody Marys when made with V8 instead of tomato juice, so that is what the recipe calls for. In order to properly celebrate this day, sit back and have yourself a Bloody Mary.
Bloody Mary Recipe
- 36 oz. V8 vegetable juice or tomato juice
- 3 stalks celery, pureed
- 1 tsp. horseradish
- 1 tsp grated red onion
- 2 Tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp. celery salt
- 1/4 tsp. sea salt
- 8-10 dashes of hot sauce
- 1 – 1 1/2 C. of vodka.
Puree celery stalks, including stems and leaves in a food processor or blender. Add all other ingredients into the food processor and blend thoroughly. Chill the mixture and pour over ice. Add garnishes such as celery, shrimp, mushrooms, peppers, etc. into the drink and serve immediately.
The food processor pictured below is the one I have, and I absolutely love it. There is almost nothing I can’t do with this machine.
Virgin Mary Drink Recipe
If you prefer an alcohol free version of the Bloody Mary, then the Virgin Mary is the drink for you. All you have to do it take the recipe above and leave out the alcohol. It’s that simple. You will still get all the flavor from the original recipe without worrying about getting tipsy.
