January 2nd ~ National Cream Puff Day
Cream Puffs are French treats that are made up of a delicate pastry called profiterole or choux, which is baked and then filled with a light cream such as a pastry cream, whipped cream, ice cream, or custard. To finish they can be left plain, dusted with powdered sugar, coated with caramel, drizzled with chocolate, fruit purees, or anything your heart desires.
Be sure to enjoy this treat today by picking some up at a local bakery, trying your hand at making a batch of these delicious treats yourself, I have included links to some great recipes below, or having one at your favorite buffet (since it is National Buffet Day today as well).
The History of the Profiterole
The history of the Cream puff is murky at best. Although many myths surround this delicious pastry it is unknown exactly when or who came up with this amazing dessert. These recipes have been around in their sweet form since the the 1500’s in both France and England. They became an art form in and of themselves as pastry chefs made them with every increasing delicacy and artistry. They were served frequently at royal gatherings and society eventy.
