Compliment Your Mirror Day ~ July 3rd

July 3, 2021

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on of [month], repeating indefinitely

National Compliment Your Mirror Day takes place on July 3rd every year.

It is a well-known fact that we are usually harder on ourselves than anyone else is.  Today is the day to set those self-defeating tendencies and give ourselves the self-esteem boost we are due.  Depression and low self-esteem are much more common than most people realize and are both issues that need to be treated.  Today is the day that you want to take a good long look at yourself in the mirror and not be critical, but rather take the time to reflect on all the positive characteristics you have.  You can do this by simply standing in front of your mirror and looking yourself in the eye and stating out loud what all you see in yourself that is positive, such as:

  • “I have really pretty eyes.”
  • “My smile is amazing.”
  • “I look really great in this color.”
  • “This new hair color looks really good on me.”
  • ” I am smart enough to accomplish what I need to this day/week/month.”
  • “You are going to crush it today!”
  • “I bring value to others’ lives.”

Ways to Increase Self Esteem

Self-esteem is, simply stated, how you feel about yourself.  People who value themselves have good self-esteem while people who are overly critical of themselves have poor self-esteem.  Having good self-esteem is critical to how people act and what they achieve in their lives.  One important step to increasing your self-esteem is exactly what this holiday is about.  Taking stock in what is good and valuable in you.  This will not be easy for people who suffer from depression or have been consistently told by others they are worthless, but these things are not true for anyone.  Everyone has many valuable traits. You just have to work to overcome the negative and look for what is positive.

If you catch yourself mentally saying you are not capable of achieving one of your goals, stop and challenge that belief by contradicting yourself with a statement of “I can.”  For instance, if you are working on a project and you are having trouble figuring part of it out you might find yourself saying “I am not smart enough to do this.”  That is a dangerous statement because it will subconsciously cause you to stop trying because you believe you can’t do it.  You need to consciously alter your thoughts to say “I am smart enough to do this.”  This may sound overly simplified but it is an important start on your journey to higher self-esteem.  Just keep repeating that mantra that you can do it and think about the steps it will take to actually achieve it.  People with higher self-esteem can fail at something and still carry that good self-image because they know that one failure does not define them.

Take stock in your relationships and if you find that you have people in your life that are not good for your well being then you need to take steps to distance yourself from them.  This will not be an easy thing to do in a lot of cases but if you get out of bad relationships and find more positive ones you will find your perception of yourself will also change.

Take time to work on your physical health as well as your mental health.  These two things are linked more than you might realize, and even taking a walk can help you feel better about yourself.

These are just a couple of ways you can start to improve your self-esteem.  If you would like to know more about how to increase your self-esteem and boost your self-confidence take a look at some of the books listed below.  And remember, you have many great things about yourself, just take a look in the mirror and let yourself know it.
