National Eat Beans Day ~ July 3rd
An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on of [month], repeating indefinitely
“Beans, beans, that magical fruit.
The more you eat, the more you toot.
The more you toot, the better you feel,
So let’s eat beans with every meal.”
We all know this age-old nursery rhyme or a version of it. It has been quoted everywhere from the playground to scholarly articles. Even Stephen King quoted it in “The Gunslinger“. But did you know there is a holiday to celebrate this musical food?
Every July 3rd is National Eat Your Beans Day.
The Benefits of Eating Beans
Beans are an important part of your diet, being a source of high fiber and protein while being very low in fat. They are also believed to lower cholesterol which leads to a healthier heart. They also contain other vital nutrients such as calcium, iron, folic acid, and potassium. Healthy adults should eat three cups of beans per week to reap the maximum rewards. Most adults eat less than half of this amount, however. If you are worried about constant flatulence caused by eating beans on a regular basis ( the cowboy scene in “Blazing Saddles” comes to mind) you don’t need to worry about that as much as you would think. Like the nursery rhyme above implies they can cause you to toot, but if eaten as a regular part of your diet, this effect diminishes greatly.
There are so many different kinds of beans that it is easy to achieve this goal without ever feeling burnt out on beans. While many people serve up plain beans on their plates alongside the main course, there are many recipes out there that will make eating beans an enjoyable and delicious experience you will look forward to.
